Historical Genocide tour of Kigali

The day begins with the Genocide Memorial in Kigali, a comprehensive museum that explains the historical background and predisposing factors leading to the genocide with static and interactive displays. An emotionally charged experience.

This is followed by a short drive to Byumba amongst Rwanda’s renowned hills through tea plantations or a similarly short drive to the swamps of Bugesera to follow the 1960 purge and persecution of Tutsis.

As Kigali was the centre of the fiercest protracted battles there are numerous significant sites which mark key points of the struggle such as UN Headquarters, Remera where the Prime Minister was killed along with her Belgian U.N. peacekeepers. Other names which were significant include Kicuciro, ETO, Nyanza and Rebero.
